to be United… are mixed-media photo collages on paper, using acrylic paint and gold leaf, that pay tribute to the presidents of the United States of America. It wrestles with the tensions of progressive hope and injustice. It seeks to reclaim the dignity of what once was, while also acknowledging the Divine character that exists within us all–whether one acts according to our standards of that or not. to be United seeks to heal generational wounds while also celebrating the life that has resisted and evolved. While we may not always agree with the path or the decisions that each one of these Presidents has chosen/chooses, we must remember that they have accepted a calling to lead this nation into the vision that seeded this country’s making, and for that, we too, should do the best we can to play our role in this calling… to be United.
