St Macrina

I wrote St Macrina and St Basil of Caesarea together because of the relational bond that their story insists on. Not only as sister/brother, but as teacher/student, a relationship that manifested work about the cosmological bonds that exist within this universe, and service that critiqued and reimagined social structures. 

These two siblings came from a family of wealth, were highly educated, and would eventually leave their fortunes to live as monastics. While their exact identities are debated (particularly the role of Macrina in her teaching and leadership positions), Byzantine Hoodoo acknowledges the wisdom St Macrina carried as staff to support her mission in teaching others about the essence of scripture, which we see in the writings of St Basil.
