St Luke Writes Home

Luke is credited with the third synoptic gospel of the Christian New Testament text, often associated with the Book of Acts as well. A more common fact is his identity as a physician, while perhaps a less common identity marker is the belief that he was the first iconographer. Scholars suggest that because of his medical background and familiarity with images of human anatomy, he took on the role of drawing the first icon, which was Mary, Mother of God, aka Mother and child, bka Madonna and child, etc.

Byzantine Hoodoo thus honors the iconography tradition by paying homage to the first image writer while also imagining St Luke writing this image as a recall to our homeplace with Mother-Earth, after sifting through the teachings of the gospel and the story of the “Virgin Mary.” In this interpretation, St Luke discovers, like many other followers, the collective mission towards global goodness. He reaches back and re-members the elements of life conducive to the present and future generations.
